The Hop Shortage
Posted in Brewing News, tagged hops on November 28, 2007 | 3 Comments »
If you spend much time reading blogs about beer, this probably isn’t the first time you heard this, but none-the-less: there’s a hop shortage and the hop shortage sucks – mostly. Why is there a hop shortage? Well, you’ll find more information from here. But suffice it to say, there had been a surplus of hops for the past several years, causing prices to plummet and farmers to rip up their hops in search of more profitable crops. The surplus is gone and now fewer farmers are growing hops. Larger interests (read beer’s equivalent of ‘The Man’) saw this coming and contracted their hop supplies. This leaves a very small supply for the rest of us, and that mostly sucks. (more…)

So Thanksgiving brought me and the family down to the Monterey Peninsula to visit my dad and the extended family (16 people around the Thanksgiving table was just the tip of the iceberg). After stuffing ourselves silly on Thursday, how about some traditional pub fare before hitting the road Friday? Don’t worry, the wife was driving afterwards. So how was it? (more…)
I’m Thankful for Beer Part 2: Anchor Christmas

Cost Plus World Market, local retailer of the Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale, let me down today. Not a 6 pack of Pumpkin Ale in the whole store for our Thanksgiving celebration. So why am I thankful? Because Whole Foods almost made me cry. I turned the corner to their beer aisle and there it was, on top of a rather impressive beer-amid: Anchor Christmas Ale 2007 (one level below, Anderson Valley’s Winter Solstice, I’ll be back for you later). “October is the best month for sports.”
This happens every October. I’m lounging around, watching a game and enjoying some craft brews with my Gainesville drinking team when someone (okay, it’s usually me) declares this. Typically, we argue about this for a while, but usually end up in agreement.
October is the best month for sports. (more…)
Stone 11th Anniversary

Every year, Stone Brewing blesses us with an Anniversary brew. it’s usually available at the beginning of September, but sometimes it takes a little while to travel to our local brew store. So what does Stone have for us in 2007? A Black IPA. Black India Pale Ale? Don’t ask me, but I can say one thing, it’s good, real good. (more…)

Widmer + Redhook = Craft Brewer’s Alliance

Earlier this week it was announced that Redhook Ale Brewery, Inc. and Widmer Brothers Brewing Co. would be combining to create the Craft Brewer’s Alliance. Anheiser-Busch Cos. owned a minority stake in both companies before the deal and will also have a minority stake in the combined company. Both brands will remain separate, so don’t worry, that same mediocre beer will still be available, but now even more so. (more…)

Looks like “The Man” has listened to the people for a change…or noticed that while the macros are losing money, the craft beer sector is growing. Either way, 4 points at Sheraton has appointed a “Chief Beer Officer.” Long story short, every 4 points at Sherton will offer 4 draft selections and 12 bottled beers. Of the 12 bottled beers, 6 must be regional and the other 6 must come from the CBO’s approved list which includes Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, Chimay and Duvel. (more…)
