This batch was brewed on July 7th, 2007 (yep, 7/7/07) at a party that was supposed to be a chance for freinds to come and meet my new daughter, Kaleigh. Well, she had other plans and didn’t arrive until the 11th. Either way, this brew is for Kaleigh and here’s how it turned out:

West Coast Barrel Aged Beer Fest November 10, 2007

It was a very intoxicating coincidence that my birthday happened to fall on the same day as a beer festival – and a good thing too! Without the frequent birthday discounts, my six tickets for 2-ounce beer samples would have gone too quickly. But with birthday discounts and the help of a cute wife, we managed to sample 25 of the 40 beers present.

Taste of Winter

Well, the Christmas and holiday season is upon us. So I picked up my first holiday seasonal of the year last week. Magic Hat’s Roxy Rolles. It’s a nice strong amber ale, rich hop flavor, but then something hit me… it’s loaded with citrus flavor! Strong notes of orange and grapefruit dominate the tasting, and while very good, got me wondering what constitutes a “seasonal” flavor. So in the interest of investigative journalism, I picked up 5 mid-west winters and 1 west coast for a bit of a tasting. Welcome everyone! What better way to start off a blog about craft brewing and homebrewing than to share a recipe I tried a couple months back. The recipe is for a Wheat Porter and is based on Dick’s Elixir Wheat Porter from Radical Brewing(a book I strongly recommend for any homebrewer). The book provided an all-grain recipe, but since I have an extract setup, I created my own recipe using the Dick’s Elixir as a guide.
