Wonderful Welcome Wheat Porter Revisited
March 10, 2008 by Mario
So a few months ago, when this whole thing started, I shared a recipe and my thoughts on the results of my homebrew named Wonderful Welcome Wheat Porter. Now, 4 months later, I am noticing the supplies are running out. So here are my thoughts on the brew as the last of it finds its way into my pint glass.
By the name of the beer, you’d think it would a porter, but after drinking a couple this weeken, I have changed my mind. This brew is definitely a brown ale. the hops have fallen away, and the beer isn’t heavy enough on the palate to be considered a porter.
So what to do? Rename the beer with 2, maybe 3 left in the world? Possibly. Wonderful Welcome Wheat Brown can work. The other option is to change the recipe for next time, and make sure this beer comes out as intended, as a wheat porter. To accomplish this, I would increase the black patent to a 1/2 lb and add a 1/4 pound of chocolate malt. Hopefully this will be what it needs. I would normally think the chocolate and black patent would be reversed had I not tried this beer initially.
Without having actually sampled this beer, what do you think? Any suggestions? Has anyone tried this recipe? Let me know what you think, because as a homebrewer, I’m always looking for new ideas and feedback.
