Any Excuse For a Beer
March 19, 2008 by Mario
Running errands the afternoon brought me to downtown Santa Rosa. While heading back to the car I found myself on a corner where I could see the outdoor seating for Russian River only a few yards away. Dinner with the in laws was more than 30 from that time, plenty of time to grab a beer.
The place want too busy, and iafter picking a table, I walked to the bar. No Pliny, most of the board was wiped clean, but there was still Rejection, the Valentine’s dark Belgian ale. Nice and dark, it was chocolatey sweet, a very nice beer.
Watching me drink my beer, the wife began to get thirsty. She wanted a hefeweizen, but that’s not an option at Russian River. I know she likes lambics, so I had to make a decision, Perdition, or the sour plout flavored Compunction. The waiter offered a sample of Compunction, so we gave it a shot.
Can I say this is the most sour beer I have ever tried. Immediately I puckered up and the wife and I stared at each other. Wow, not ordering that…but let me finish that sample. Again, instant pucker…but as the taste fades, I want more. But this was a beer for my wife, and she shocked me, she ordered an IPA. She hates hops, and Blind Pig is a hop showcase.
As expected, she didn’t like the IPA, but that’s ok. I came to the resuce and finished that sweet hoppy wonderful beer. While enjoying it we noticed the time, and I was pressured to drink faster. As an obedient husband, I rushed through this fantastic beer, and off we went for dinner.
The lesson for today, if you see an opportunity to drink a fine beer, take it.
