Pull a Pyramid Out Of Your Hat
April 29, 2008 by Mario
Looks like the trend of mergers and acquisitions that marks other industries is making its way to craft breweris. The newest merger involves the West coast’s Pyramid Breweries and the East coast’s Magic Hat Brewing Co.
If you want all of the details, there’s a joint press release that’s slightly more interesting than stereo instruction manual that can be found here. What it comes down to is that Magic Hat will be acquiring Pyramid Brewing and assuming the debt carried by Pyramid. We will hopefully be seeing Magic Hat brewed in Pyramid breweries and possibly Pyramid brewed in Magic Hat breweries.
Friends of mine on the East Coast are huge fans of Magic hat, specifically their No 9. Some people here on Brewed For Thought have certain opinion about Pyramid Brewing. Maybe a few of those people will give us their opinions (Chris? Brian?)

Well Mario, hopefully you’ll get a better shot at seeing Magic Hat (and their fortune-like bottle caps) on store shelves out there. They have a decent distribution network out at least down to the DC area, and #9 can be found in places like World Market and Giant. Haven’t seen some of their other selections like Circus Boy (their Hefe) or their seasonals outside of the big liquor stores like Total Wine, however. I’m hoping this means we get some Pyramid products out this way as well.
Ding dong the #*&%( is gone!!!
I don’t like airing my dirty laundry, but Pyramid was a horrible company. They purchased Portland Brewing Company a few years ago and changed the yeast in the Honeybeer, it never tasted the same. Why? To cut costs. Why did they make most of their business decisions? To cut costs.
Anecdotal evidence indicated that Corona and Budweiser (not Budvar) are (were, I hope?) the beers of choice of the management at the Berkeley Pyramid Brewery
My grievances go further, but let me say that if we gain Magic Hat beer distribution on the West Coast (I’ve tried a few of their beers when on the East Coast) and lose Pyramid’s psychotic beer-hating management, the world will be a better place.
