I was told to drink more beer, so I drank more beer. I didn’t drink it all, but I drank enough. Upon arriving home from our camping trip, of my beers, I was down to one CoCoNut Porter and 3 Steelheads. Not bad considering we went out and bought beer on Saturday. So Monday night I sat down with one of the Steelheads and decided to get back to the task of drinking beer.
This beer was a standby at BBQs in college. It’s a light and easy to drink pale ale that Dave was just crazy for, and I have to admit, I was pretty fond of it as well. Actually, Mad river brewing labels this one as an Extra Pale Ale and when poured into a glass it becomes apparent why. This beer resembles a lager more than a pale ale in appearance. Very light in color, slightly darker than a straw yellow, it is definitely not a pale ale in style.
The aroma and taste don’t lead you to think pale ale either. Very light with a spicy hop flavor, Steelhead is more like a lager, with the fruitiness of an ale in the malt. Nothing too overpowering here, just a well balanced beer. I offered one to my wife’s friend on the camping trip, and while he’s not a craft beer drinker, he really liked this one. It’s always nice to have that beer that you can bring to a party that has flavor but those snobby macro drinkers won’t be overpowered with.
The first one was so nice, I made sure to drink a second, so I am down to one more in the fridge. That’s ok, because while we emptied the fridge before leaving town for camping, I made sure to fill it with beer. I’ll be ok.
