One of my favorite past times is watching sports. One great way to enhance the activity (or lack thereof) of watching sports is to drink beer. Yet another way would be to make claims about the results of those athletic contests and wager an amount of beer that you’re going to be correct. Well, I was wrong. (more…)

Beer today, specifically West Coast beer, can really get in your face. Arrogant Bastard slaps you around and calls you names, and you like it. Sonoma County IPAs aren’t just big, but ridiculously hoppy, leaving you drowsy not from just from the huge amounts of alcohol, but from the battle that just took place with your taste buds. So when I reached for IPA Nectar, I got ready, I did my stretches, slapped my face a few times, and stared that bottle down. It’s go time! (more…)

One of the things about brewing that I ove is being able to freestyle and create whatever it is you want to drink. As homebrewers, we can add weird ingredients, blend styles, and hope the results are as good as we imagined, but usually we settle for them being drinkable. When you brew 5 gallons at a time, you have the luxury of being able to toss out a batch if need be, even if it does suck. When you’re brewing large batches for sale and your livelihood, as well as those of others, is riding on it, experimenting isn’t always a good idea. At Firestone Walker, they brewed a dark ale that leaves leaves the comfort of traditional styles and created something truly amazing. (more…)

For my birthday I received a nice amount of money to spend on beer at BevMo. Sunday, before the weather got too nasty, I decided to spend a little of it. I didn’t want to spend too much, thirty or forty dollars. Enough to stock the fridge and maybe add a beer or two t the closet. Let’s see how I did. (more…)

Uno the beagle has nothing on this weekend’s big winner. For those that don’t know, Toronado’s barleywine festival took place this weekend. This is the biggest of the big barleywine festivals for the biggest of the big beers. So who competed? Who won? And what’s with the dog reference? (more…)

We all know the wonderful selection of brews that the holidays bring, but it gets even better when that selection enters your home and makes itself cozy in your fridge. A couple trips down the beer aisle and some generous gifts from friends around the country have lead to a fridge full of holiday cheer and new beers I have yet to try. Here’s what I have in the fridge for Christmas. (more…)
