Here in the Bay Area, we’re all pretty interested to see what Magic Hat Brewing Company has to offer since word was announced that they would be taking over Pyramid Breweries. Thankfully, I have some friends out on the East Coast and they sent me a bottle of the “not quite Pale Ale” No 9.
I’ve been told this is quite the session brew, so I didn’t expect my bottle to last too long. It poured a clear copper with a little haze. The aroma of apricot is fairly strong. My first impression of the brew is that it is slightly funky but with a refreshing finish. The apricot is there, but not overpowering. I can see how one beer could lead to another with this one. When/if this brew hits the West Coast, expect it to be a popular BBQ and tailgating brew. This one has summer drinking written all over it.
Another thing I’ve been hearing a lot about are the bottle caps for Magic Hat brews. I paid specific attention to the cap and in the end, I must be missing something. At the center of the back cap is a red burst with a gold spiral widening to the edge of the cap. Under the cap I was greeted with the phrase “Don’t let Attraction become a Distraction.” Not sure if this is standard for all caps, guess we’ll just have to open a few bottles to find out.
Still no word on the future of Magic Hat on the West Coast, but I will welcome this beer with open arms. Hopefully we’ll know sooner than later the fate of Magic Hat Brewing Co. out California way.
