This weekend the wife and I will depart on a journey neither of us have taken before: the camping trip. I don’t know what to expect, but I do know I need supplies, namely beer.
Initially I had my eyes on the IPA and Watermelon Wheat from 21st Amendment Brewing. Cans are perfect for camping and those selections would appease me as well as the wife. Unfortunately, there were none to be found at either Bottle Barn or BevMo.
While contemplating the chance that BevMo would carry 21st Amendment brews, I remembered hearing of this Maui CoCoNut Porter. I like porter, the wife likes coconut, should be a good fir. To my surprise, I found that Maui packages all of their beers in cans.
Going into this, I thought of what a Coconut porter would taste like. I envisioned a chocolate coconut milk like beer. Very dark and thick with the coconut playing a key role in the flavor. What I got was something completely different.
The beer pours as you would expect, dark, thick with a big coffee colored head. The aroma is of chocolate syrup and this is what you taste up front. The fizzy sweetness turns into a coffee bitterness and washes down smoothly. The mouthfeel isn’t nearly as thick as I would expect and there is no trace of the coconut, as far as I could tell.
The wife was similarly surprised by the flavor. She didn’t seem to dislike the beer, and actually went back for more, but she wasn’t excited about it either.
This is a very good porter. I hope people don’t discount the beer because of the fruity name, this stands up to any other porter on the market. We grabbed 2 4-packs for the trip and I’ll do my best not to drink them before I leave. Do yourself a favor and grab some of these cans. If you happen to try their other beers, let me know how those go.
